Jed Rant: Buddhacide Part Two
« on: August 23, 2017, 03:04:53 am »
This can be the fun step, and sometimes the most challenging. In the Guru tradition of India, a student is encouraged to worship the guru, wash his/her feet, give endless offerings, and on and on. On top of this, there is an unspoken theme within that culture that one must do this for a long time, often a lifetime.  I never experienced a desire to devote myself to anyone. Worshipping anyone or anything is beyond my comprehension. Certainly studying under someone or reading certain books was a great help but devotion was not my way to further. Having said that, I did devote most of my adult life to the search for Truth. If devotion works for you then go for it, however, I caution you against getting stuck, which usually manifests as a few ''spiritual'' experiences followed by cementing your devotional feet in one place. I recognize the subtlety of the student/guru relationship and it can very easily become a trap.

This can affect both parties and a guru might be pulled a little ''away'' from the end point by believing he/she actually is a teacher and not just a disposable pointing mechanism. It's also possible for a guru to think his or her teachings are important. Some gurus slip into a Mayaic mechanism of creating dependencies of student on guru and guru on student. Regardless of how a living guru holds or presents himself to you, there will always have their human side because they have chosen to return from the non-state of T/R in order to live out this dream. Of course, it's not them living it out, it would be closer to say that it's Truth living out the dream character of the appearing human guru.

I have said many times before that you do not need a guru, you don't need any teachings and you certainly don't need to devote yourself to anyone … but, in a certain place and time these may be useful provided that you, as student, never, ever get attached to any of them… never. Take them, use them and discard them. Any true teacher will (in my not very humble opinion) model out this to his student mostly by means of not exhibiting an attachment to the student. This might sound a little cold, but I see no differentiation between myself and a student and thus it is quite easy for me to do this. Because the student is indeed the guru, it could be said that the guru does nothing for the student…. only for his/her ''Self''… which is not a personal self. There is only one Self and You are It.

The last thing a guru needs is for a student to fall in love with the pointer, perhaps fall in love with the moon, but not the pointer. It's also the last thing that any student needs. You can, and probably have, seen gurus that are bent on having a following… if you want to follow, go for it, and if you want to make some real headway, I suggest you avoid such a situation.
How does a student kill the guru? You don't have to do anything except become intensely aware of the stories you live your life by… the stories that you are imperfect and some guru is holy and perfect… above you in some way. The biggest and most frequent story I hear is that a student feels unworthy. If you feel unworthy, how can you accept the idea that you are, in fact, God (not of the Christian variety).

Love your parents, love your spouse, love your children, love your guru, even love your ''self'' (small 's') and you will find these ALL end, someday. That end will contain suffering because human love is just a story… nothing more. Real love never ends and it's not for the ''person''. It is just what is.

Because the student is indeed the guru...
When I first got to the forum, I read the name as
"Invisible GuruS Forum"

and thought:
'So cool ! Here the Gurus gather, who share their experience.'

Maya is having you stick around to watch the drama. Much to be learned here if you are ready.

Sounds like you might be.
