Sleepwalking
« on: November 01, 2016, 05:30:49 am »
I will write a detailed post about my situation later, but at the meantime I just want to know Jed's thoughts on Vippassana Meditation technique as this is my practice atm.

I've been recently to a 10 day retreat where I learned about this. I had some progress and a lot of insight about how stupid I was acting in life to preserve my ego/self image/pride/honor etc, multiple times smarter in general.

I don't know how informed you are about the technique but the basic principle is to sit for extended hours and by focusing on the sensations on your body, you sharpen your mind and awareness. While your are in this state the challenge is to maintain the equanimity of your mind through all the negative or positive experiences on your body or the dramas that your mind brings up from your past or future. You practice not responding with  craving to the good sensations of the body or the thoughts of  the mind and also not responding with aversion/hatred  with the unpleasant sensations or thoughts by being aware of the law of impermanence of all the sensations/thoughts/emotions. this equanimity translates later into your day to day life. in other words you exercise seeing things objectively which is the holy grail IMO.

I know you are against meditation but this sounds very practical to me. what are your thoughts on this? am I wasting my time? or is there a more time efficient method to approach my goal? ie. Human adulthood and higher consciousness.

Dear A:

Welcome to the forum... now it's reflection time.

1.) Who is doing all this V stuff?
2.) Who wants equanimity?
3.) Who wants a sharper mind and more sensitivity?
4.) blah, blah, blah... fill in more questions if you want.

You are putting lipstick on a pig. Find out who/what you are and you will have all of those things you seek, and more... with the added bonus that you won't care any more about it. Of course, there is nothing wrong with what you describe in that it might make for a better dream at times, but the dream will always be a dream until you wake up, and for that... what you describe is far from optimal. But HEY, what do I know? Do what you do like your life depended on it.

Love ya, Jed.

Thanks for the reply Dear Jed.

The answer to those questions is I. I'm an Illusion I know.
TBH (What do I have to hide from Mr. Jed?) I want to get all those perks of human adulthood so I can have an easier time with girls. on some level at least...

Posting here is a kinda Spiritual Autolysis IMO as I have to think hard about correctness of what I'm writing here, because I put Jed in a very high regard and I know he won't take any bs. and the funny thing is that when I tried to do the SA for my own sake I didn't have the patience but for other people I have the patience to do it (ego mechanics of maintaining self image) also whatever I write turns out to be just mayas word and I have to delete it and rewrite again and again. I come to realize what you said in Warfare more and more, that All the thoughts are just emotions speaking to supports beliefs or rationalize fears etc and true thinking is something different.

OK back to where we were. I know why you asked those questions about who does the V stuff and who wants those good qualities etc. you wanted me to ponder about the self and the nature of it. but I've done that before I've realized the temporary nature of it long ago, the fact that it doesn't exist but the illusion gets recreated in the consciousness that it exists every moment (for survival?). so I think I'm past that, or in your words I have killed the dragon and now I want to clean the mess which is the whole point. I want to extend the duration and the depth of my realization. I still have a lot of problem making distinction between what is true wanting and what is ego wanting, when it is maya who is speaking trough me and when it is true me (until its very late), although there is no such a thing as true me so is all the words maya? what about your words jed.

Still emotions hijack a lot of my rationality, although I know all these and I've realized them in many ways in my life. still I have desires and I keep convincing myself that its ok to have desires etc and that's why I picked up meditation and vippassana specifically to be able to think in a clearer manner, a bit freer from my fears and wants. so can you elaborate a bit more on why its far from optimal and what are my other options?  some pointers about the nexts steps would be greatly appreciated.

There is another category of thoughts which occupies the mind (mine at least):

most of the time we are thinking it is actually other peoples words just repeating in our head, ie. things that we have read, listened to etc. there is nothing original about it while it may feel very good as if we are very wise people. I don't think it leads to any progress at all. or maybe it does, as if by taking someone's perspective it helps us understand their world view more. or maybe it just leads to our own misleading, because what if those words are false? they will turn into our own beliefs as well as they get repeated in our head. Its hard to think for oneself.

I'm slacking and not committed deep enough to the process. Its stupid that I don't commit 100%, I feel guilty about living a life that might be a lie. I need to really start from 0 and come to something that is true 100% then build everything else on top of it. I want to start by analyzing the Cogito, seeing if my mind can accept it on my own (without relying on the fact that because everyone is accepting it it must be true) handling all objections that I might have. Then dissect the dialogue in the first chapter of the theory of everything. I will come to you if I encountered any road blocks.

I spent the last couple of days listening to spiritual warfare audio book and also taking some online courses on reasoning and logic. haven't started the actual SA yet.

In the book you mentioned in order to wake up you need the emotional energy comparable to the energy a rocket needs to escape the earths gravity. I don't have that much energy or desperation that you talk about, I know what you talk about has some truth to it and I'm just curious to give it a fair trial. so should I begin with SA or should I begin with just prayer instead? prayer to have that energy and desperation for waking up.

Also you mentioned that living with the eyes open (ie. adulthood) is a whole different state of being. but most of the qualities you talked about for adulthood, for example releasing the tiller or manifesting desires, killing our parents  etc all seem totally just like some life skills, which can be mastered by anyone with proper education and one doesn't need to change his state of being completely in order to attain them.everyone with some life experience attains them to some degree whether one knows it or not.what is your thoughts on this?

I cheated I think Jed, just did the shrooms, I think its was the universe wanting me to do it so I did it.

I experienced a lot of things, including how everything has lead to where I'm here now. and I think universe wants me to wake up, and is giving me a chance at it.

we are manifesting things in life all the time, even if we are unaware it.

We keep thinking because we deeply think that we are living in a world that is real, but only the thinker is real.

Ego keeps living as long as we have this false knowledge that the world is real.

If we go deep and remove all the objectives that ego might come up with for why this world is real, and convince it from all the directions, that its just a dream, then the ego will relax and let go of the control. then it knows that it has no power and no will in this dream world and will let the universe take care of everything, because that is what's happening anyway. and then the compulsive thinking will stop. no need to constantly practice mindfulness anymore. and the life starts from here.

it is possible to think your self out of this world, because the world itself is held upright by the power of thoughts and beliefs.

The ego dies when this world is destroyed.

it goes both-ways, get rid of one and the other dies too. or maybe its just me who feels like ego death = universe death. :-\

The toughest part of defeating the ego is just defeating the intellect, nuking the reasoning and logical part of being out of orbit. but first we must make that part as Sharp as possible through SA.

I'm gonna do one hour of SA every morning before starting my day from tomorrow, you said it sharpens the mind on its own so I'm gonna skip my morning meditation routine and just do SA, giving it a fair trial for a month before deciding if its for me or not. hopefully dying and fading into black gradually day by day   a sad tune plays here ;)

BTW I've a question, if truth is infinite and exists all the time and "I am" is the truth, then where does the truth go when "I AM" in deep sleep or under anesthesia?

The 'I am' is a doorway, you created this universe by using the 'I am' and, as Ramana said, go back the way you came. Contemplate your sense of 'I am', not your thoughts about it. This is also what Nis did per his guru's directive.
