I like the exercise, it stretches your mind. A dream within a dream (Inception anyone?).
What if when we die we wake up, to another dream? How many layers can there be? I would say infinite.

It's a little like considering a computer simulated reality, like The Matrix but without any humans plugged in. Just software.
Computer technology is not far away from us being able to create a computer simulation of reality. At least in a small scale. When we accomplished that, we will probably consider, very seriously, that we ourselves live in a simulation. Once there, we will inevitably ask the question about how many layers of simulation can you create?

BTW. There are multiple TED and TEDx talks about this. Here's one that proves, using statistics, that we already live in a computer simulation.

Try that on for size. :-)

Anyway, all this is just conceptual speculations that doesn't get one closer to truth other than it stretches your mind a little bit outside of your every day box.
