I'm reluctant to post in response to the question posed directly to Jed but as I count them (3 days) since you asked I'll share my experience with "quieting the mind"

Thoughts tend to wander when you're not being very present. The mind will replay items on it's agenda from a time when you were more present. So the number one way to deal with this is to have no unfinished business and to be more present.

If this doesn't work then you can either zoom your attention onto something else to occupy your attention, something else that's more interesting or you can zoom your attention out to where you don't notice the mind rambling like a television left on in the other room.

Also when there is no you resisting the thoughts they will cease to be a problem. Thoughts come and go and you wouldn't necessarily want to stop them unless you thought they were a problem to begin with. Let them come up. Who cares? Just observe and don't become resistant or attached to any of them.

Hope that's somewhat helpful.
